Voat is basically a clone of Reddit, with a karma system and a
relatively nice open community. If you are familiar with how Reddit
works, then you will pretty much get used to it relatively quickly. It’s
run by a small team so their site goes down frequently. However, if
they get more users and start to do well, they will have more resources
and money to keep the site up. It’s a fun and light website, so why
don’t you give it a try!
Similar to Reddit, Snapzu allows you to post links/content to various
channels (aka tribes). However, it has much more polished look than
Reddit. It has a wide variety of subjects for you to choose from. There
is also a score system similar to the karma system on Reddit. You will
get various titles based on the points accumulated over time. People who
sign up earlier tends to get higher titles. The annoying part is that
you have to request an invite. But they tend to send out those invites
pretty quickly. The community there tends to be less edgy than those
from Reddit, which can be both good and bad as it means more passive and
dull comments.
The site is a lot more polished looking than Reddit in general.
Stacksity works a lot like subreddits. Subreddits are ‘stacks’ over
there. There are no moderators in each stack. However, good contents are
also voted to rise to the top. Once you have an account and explore,
it’s pretty easy to get around. It’s still a new site and has a lot of
potential to grow. We’ll see.
Webchat is an app based community. It’s mostly known in the Chinese
community because of its massive Chinese users. The app started in China
and is used by Chinese around the globe. It also has a massive and very
engaging English speaking community as well. It’s a bit to find good
community / content to join /follow. You have to know the people who are
already in these groups in order to join. So you have to put in a bit
of work in order to find content you like.
Similar to Webchat, Aether is another app based community. Unlike
Wechat where people use their real names and identities when interacting
in the community, Aether’s users use anonymous posting. Their goal was
to be a purely anonymous Reddit. It’s mostly just links, no images. You
might not find it as interesting.
Yik Yak is a text based community, so it might not appeal to
everyone. But it has very light, interesting and localized content. Yik
Yak has recently improved the flow of conversation so that people can
identify who they are responding and the community has making effort to
cut down abuse. Yaks with point of -5 will be deleted automatically.
Stumble Upon is a great way to find interesting new websites. I
actually found Reddit through Stumble Upon. It has a very simple
structure. You just have to signup, pick your interests, and then click
on the Stumble Upon button. You will see random websites that are
selected based on your interests. The community isn’t that big on
commenting or interacting. People are mostly there to explore new
content/websites. It also can be very addicting, so think very careful
when you sign up!
Hacker News has a relatively tech oriented community. It’s a great
site to keep up with all the changes and happenings in the tech
industry. If you are subscribed to /r/technology, you will like Hacker
News. It’s a very simple, practical, and helpful community.
To be honest, I don’t really like how Tumblr works. But it does have a
rather large and engaging community. If you explore some popular tags,
you will find quality content. People there are more TV, film, and
artsy. For lighthearted content, it’s not so bad. I’ve seen a lot of
frontpage content on Reddit linking from Tumblr as well.
Newsvine focus on linking out news. The community is very interested
in current events and the discussions tend to be small. It’s not nearly
as extreme as some of the subreddits, for example /r/worldnews.
Folks over at Frizbee are very vocal about their mission against
censorship. They are still in beta. The community is very open and
everything is anonymous. Other users can take your account if you are
not fully register. So if you want to open an account, go through the
entire process and become fully registered.
